Home water pressure reducing valve (PRV)
This type of valve, often referred to as a Water Pressure Regulator or PRV, is an intelligent, self-actuated valve that uses the energy of the medium (water) itself to automatically regulate and control pipeline pressure. It is crucial for protecting home plumbing systems and appliances from damaging high or fluctuating municipal water pressure.
Core Function and Structure
The primary function is to maintain a constant, safe pressure downstream (outlet pressure), regardless of changes in the upstream (inlet) pressure or flow volume.
| Feature | Description | Benefit |
| Control Mechanism | Utilizes a diaphragm-type direct-acting structure and a pilot reduction valve (in some models) to precisely control the main valve opening. | Simple & Reliable: Extremely simple internal mechanism ensures reliable, jam-free performance and durability. |
| Pressure Stability | The outlet pressure remains stable and safe, regardless of variations in inlet pressure or inlet flow rate. | System Protection: Reliably maintains the desired pressure setting, protecting residential fixtures and appliances. |
| No External Power | An intelligent valve that uses the medium’s (water) energy for regulation. | Energy Saving: No electricity or external power required for operation. |
| High Performance | Excellent hydraulic characteristics with minimal pressure loss and a high reduction ratio (up to 10:1 or more). | Efficient Flow: Ensures strong, stable water pressure throughout the home. |
| Installation Simplicity | Resistant to dirt and scale; often requires no external filter or bypass piping. | Cost Savings: Significantly simplifies piping and saves installation space and cost. |
Technical Parameters
| Parameter | Specification | Notes |
| Nominal Pressure (PN) | 1.0MPa, 1.6MPa, 2.5MPa | Available in three common pressure classes. |
| Housing Test Pressure ($P_h$) | P_h = 1.5 * PN | Indicates the structural integrity test pressure (e.g., 2.4MPa for a PN 1.6MPa valve). |
| Seal Test Pressure ($P_s$) | P_s = 1.1 * PN | Indicates the sealing integrity test pressure. |
| Applicable Medium | Water | Used in domestic, fire fighting, and industrial water supply systems. |
| Applicable Temperature | 0°C$ to 80°C | Suitable for cold and standard hot water systems. |
| Adjustable Outlet Pressure Range | PN 1.0MPa Valve: 0.09 – 0.8MPa | The pressure can be precisely set within this range. |
| PN 1.6MPa Valve: 0.10 – 1.2MPa | ||
| PN 2.5MPa Valve: 0.15 – 1.6MPa |
Installation Guidelines
- Orientation: For ease of operation and maintenance, the valve is typically installed vertically on a horizontal pipeline.
- Flow Direction: Ensure the flow of the medium in the pipeline matches the direction indicated by the arrow on the valve body.
- Safety Requirement: To prevent downstream over-pressurization (due to potential defects or pressure spikes), an additional simple safety valve should be installed at least 4m downstream of the PRV outlet.
Understanding your home’s water system is essential for selecting the correct PRV.
